By the age of twelve, I discovered the world of comic books and my frustrations at not being able to replicate those seemingly simple drawings—and my "never surrender" attitude—became my art school for many years.
Another great gift from Mom
was her love of music. And while I never showed much musical
aptitude to speak of, I spent untold hours lying on the
living room floor listening to her movie soundtrack LPs
while attempting to copy the great movie poster
art from those album covers.

While I did not know the names
until much later in life, those artists—Howard Terpning,
Frank McCarthy (Doctor Zhivago, Thunderball), and others,
were some of my earliest art
teachers. I also fell in love with a coffee-table
book on Norman Rockwell. I began to realize true draftsmanship, composition, aerial perspective...and emotion within a two-dimensional frame. Then, before long,
Frank Frazetta showed me the superhero-like power of paint. I
was hooked and netted. My future realized.
